This area of law covers a wide range of issues – including copyright, patent and trademarks – and is towards the top of the league table of disputes involving substantial commercial enterprises. The pace of technological change shows no sign of slowing down and the world is certainly not less economically complex than it was. One of the principal forces behind the increasing importance of this area of law is the ‘global village’ effect. It used to be the case that a London business would not normally need to concern itself with a Texas company with the same name and doing the same thing. Since both companies could well now turn up at the top of a Google results page, this is no longer true.
